Does Marijuana Affect Your Sex Life? - 2019 Updated

Cannabis (marijuana) has a bit of a mixed reputation when it comes to sex. You may have heard that it’s a traditional herbal aphrodisiac with nearly mythical libido-boosting powers. Or maybe you heard that it can reduce sperm count or contribute to erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation. In reality?

Marijuana affects libido in different ways

It's still unclear exactly how marijuana might boost sex drive, but theories abound.

"People who use marijuana may have more sex because they put less pressure on themselves when they are high, so they don't have the same performance anxiety as those who are sober," suggested sex therapist Amanda Pasciucco, who practices in Connecticut, where medical use is legal. "A small amount of marijuana may also help increase your ability to communicate your preferences to your partner."

Sex therapist Lawrence Siegel noted that in particular, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol -- the cannabinoid THC -- appears to target a part of our brain associated with sexual arousal, at least in females.

First, marijuana is not just one thing. There are different strains of cannabis that can affect the body in very different ways. One strain (indica) tends to more relaxing, while the other (sativa) tends to be more stimulating. Researchers haven’t yet looked at whether these cannabis strains impact sexual functioning in different ways, but it is worth exploring.

Second, people differ in their sensitivity to marijuana, just as they differ in their sensitivity to alcohol. We all know some people who get wasted after just one drink, and others who seem to keep it together no matter how much they imbibe. The same goes for smoking up or enjoying some edible treats: some get giddy, others get sleepy, and more than a few get paranoid.

Admittedly, the different psychoactive effects of marijuana probably result from a combination of differences in drug sensitivity as well as usage of different cannabis strains; however, even with the same strain, it is very likely that different guys will experience different sexual effects based on how it interacts with their own body chemistry.

Many weed enthusiasts report that weed makes them more relaxed and lowers their anxiety and sexual inhibitions. They report being interested in trying particular activities that they might have been too shy to try sober. Anxiety’s ability to decimate every aspect of a person’s sex life should not be underestimated. A little anxiety relief may be just what you need to have a better sex life.

But just like wine, too much weed can have the opposite effect. Paranoia— one of the most stereotypical reactions to weed—doesn’t exactly make sex very fun. And other people find that instead of making them feel relaxed and uninhibited, weed actually makes them feel anxious and stuck in their own thoughts

The effect that weed will have on your sexual inhibitions probably boil down to the effect that weed has on you in general. If you tend to be relaxed and happy on weed, you’ll probably be more open to sex while high. If weed makes you anxious and paranoid, it’s probably not a great idea to smoke for the explicit purposes of lowering your sexual inhibitions.
