How does a COB LED work?

What are COB LEDs?
Relatively new to the LED market, chip on board (COB) LEDs offer many advantages over the standard options. COB LEDs are basically multiple LED chips (typically nine or more) bonded directly to a substrate by the manufacturer to form a single module. Since the individual LEDs used in a COB are chips and not traditionally packaged, the chips can be mounted such that they take up less space and the highest potential of the LED chips can be obtained. When the COB LED package is energized, it appears more like a lighting panel than multiple individual lights as would be the case when using several SMD LEDs mounted closely together.

LEDS
Typically, LEDs used as grow lights for indoor gardens include an array of colors to help mimic that of sunlight. So, plants get a spectrum of red and blue lights, along with green sometimes (these sometimes appear white). You may have seen these spread out in grow lights that are large with each individual LED encased in a tiny bulb.

COB
This stands for “chip on board,” and it’s a way of clustering LEDs in a concentrated area. When it’s turned on, it looks like a single light, rather than an array of tiny lights like a spider web. These lights are usually housed in ceramic, copper, or aluminum, which acts as a heat sink to help dissipate heat generated by all those little lights.

Why Growers Are Crazy For COB LED Grow Light?
Electrical Efficiency
Efficiency is measured in µmol/j, which is the amount of photosynthetically active photons that can be produced per watt that is consumed at the wall.

The process is interpreted as µmol per watt. The efficiency of a COB LED grow light is about 130-140 lm/watt.

Low Heat Output
Heat ventilation in COB LED grow lights are ideal. The LED grow lights produce strong light without emitting a great deal of heat.

Some high-end COB grow lights have a quality substrate that boasts fans and drivers to reduce heat output even more.

Mars Hydro 300W COB grow light

MarsHydro 300W Cob LED Grow Light

This particular grow light is perfect for small grow tents because of its compact size and low heat output. In addition, if you are doing indoor farming or you are having a small area to cover, the Mars Hydro COB light will be a good option.

The light can be used for a small number of plants. This light offers high lumens and full spectrum led grow light compared to ordinary grow lights in the same price range that emits only red and blue light. The light emitted from this compact lamp has a range from 380nm to 780 nm wavelength.
